The Good Friday Procession in Alcudia, Mallorca

Good Friday Procession in Alcudia, Mallorca

Semana Santa, Mallorca

For the Christian calendar, Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary.  In countries like Spain, Semana Santa (Holy Week) is marked with a number of processions, parades and ceremonies.

The images of the crucifixion and the procession are very powerful as the floats and fraternities make their way through town.  It is an exceptional event to witness.  Very sombre in mood, the Good Friday procession is a celebration of penitence and sincere repentance.  The walled city of Alcudia, in the North Eastern corner of Mallorca, filled quickly as night fell and the locals gathered before the procession.

Alcudia itself is an interesting town, its story dating back to the 1300s during the Bronze Age.  It has been well preserved and there are many points of historical significance.  Take the time to climb the steps to walk along the old fortress walls.  The Romans conquered the island in 123 BC, making this site a prime Roman settlement.  Roman ruins can be found just outside the city walls.  Be sure to take the time to climb the steps to the top of the wall for a better view.
