Beaches and Bikes in Mallorca

For a few days now, our merry band of cyclists (10 in total) have been living it up in Mallorca – great fun with beaches and bikes and miles upon miles of brilliant cycling at our disposal.  We hit the road early, leaving Llucmajor for the north east corner of the island.  The boys were out to beat each other up over the climbs to Formentor, the rest of us were saving it for next week, opting for lunch by the beach instead!  Very civilized.

We followed the cami towards Montuiri on the way to Sineu for coffee and a bakery shop.  The roads were idyllic as we cruised along, not a care in the world.  It was such a peaceful morning – I could smile knowingly as my friends marvelled at how great it was to be in Mallorca.  I love coming back here and know I will do it again!

For me, Sineu is normally a lunch stop – Bar Sabina makes the best Pa amb’oli and I had been looking forward to it since our riding here last year, but today we were too early for lunch.  Coffees were ordered as a few of us headed next door for pastries at the baker’s shop.

Before long, the cutest group of kids came along for a bakery tour.  They looked at us in amazement and we just burst out laughing!  They were the most adorable group – the call came out – they were brought out to make the tourists smile!  Before you knew it, we the cyclists had become the papparrazzi to these kids as we started snapping photos.  How could we resist – look at those faces!  Check out the rope too – the little wooden handles for the kids to hang on to!  Adorable.

Caffinated and energy boosted, we hit the road – destination Port d’Alcudia for lunch.  We cruised the cami system, rolled the ups and downs of the road, covering ground like it was flat!  (FYI – not too many roads are flat, but that is part of what makes them perfect!)

It is quite the sight to see – packs of cyclists going through town in all directions, swinging through the round-a-bouts, light flashing off bikes and brightly coloured lycra catching your eye!  Everywhere you went, there were bikes – we have landed in a cyclists dreamland.  We meandered up the cycleway to Port d’Alcudia, somehow missed the cafe we were looking for, and continued rolling along, opting to lunch along the promenade in Port de Polleca.  Life is good!

One of the many advantages to cycling holidays, loads of fresh air and no trouble working up an appetite!  We dug into our plates like no tomorrow, washing it down with one of my favourites – chocolate caliente!

Other than a map check and a stop for more chocolate caliente  (more like hot chocolate pudding at the bar in Sancelles), we peddled on home, another 140km day in the bag.  Life in Mallorca is good!

  1. This sounds so wonderful. What a wonderful place to be. You make this all sound so simple, but I’m sure that the hard work involved is just as satisfying as the stops along the way. Looking forward to hearing more.

    • It is awesome – if you enjoy cycling – it is the best! Lots of work involved, but the feel good kind! Great way to work up an appetite too! And I can’t even begin to describe the scenery! Sadly, I have to leave the DSLR at home – the photos are all with my little pocket point and shoot!

    • You are so right – such a great way to travel. Cycling in Mallorca is magic – everywhere you go, there are so many cyclists. It is amazing – the cafes are filled with bikes and everyone looks so happy and fit. Love doing the cycling/touring thing – great way to see places in Europe.
