Willow Stream Spa at Mayakoba: Chocolate Nourishment for the Soul

Imagine being covered from head to toe in decadent dark chocolate – the ultimate pampering begins at Willow Stream Spa at Mayakoba Fairmont Resort in the Mayan Riviera.  For chocolate lovers – nourishment for the soul begins here!

The Food of the Gods package is decadent, a 60 minute treat for the senses.  Chocolate, or Ka’kaw (Mayan word for chocolate), was highly revered in pre-Hispanic Mexico.  Often offered as a tribute to the gods, it was, and still is, considered to be edible gold.  Loaded with antioxidants, this experience includes a cacao mask body wrap, scalp massage and finishes with a coconut oil and rose essence massage.

Time stood still as I lay on the table, music gently playing in the background.  The rich scents of chocolate permeated the air as my massage therapist gently rubbed the warm mixture over my body.  My mind drifted to the gift shop where I knew I would find a bar of dark chocolate later in the afternoon.  The experience was the ultimate in pampering – I could not believe how good the warm chocolate felt against my skin.  Time lost all meaning as I lay there, warm blankets and sensual chocolate floating in the air.  My skin and soul were both nourished as my mind wandered and total relaxation took over.

With the help of my massage therapist, me and my chocolate encrusted body moved to the shower.  With warm water washing over me, hot chocolate was rinsed down the drain.  It left me wondering – was the chocolate mask edible?  Freshly rinsed and feeling like a princess, I was escorted back to the table for a fantastic scented massage.  I left feeling refreshed, rejuvenated.  The spa brochure suggested their mission is for you, their guest, to leave feeling energized and renewed.  They were completely successful.  To top it all off, as I headed out of the treatment room to relax at the rooftop mineral pool, my wonderful therapist handed me a chocolate medallion.  This was no ordinary chocolate – we are talking the most decadent, rich, dark chocolate – the perfect end to a perfect spa escape!

The Willow Stream Spa experience starts before the treatment.  From the moment I walked through the glass doors and crossed the threshold to the welcome desk, I was welcomed by an experience coordinator who walked me through the Mayakoba Spa menu.  Once we settled on a uniquely Mayakoba experience, I was escorted into the women’s only section where aromatheraphy steam rooms, relaxation rooms and spa pools waited for me to melt away the day and recharge my weary soul.  They recommend you come an hour early to make the most of your experience.  Sit and relax in the luxurious surroundings, there are plenty of magazines on hand if you just want to put your feet up, or Fairmont’s special blends of herbal teas to sip as you contemplate your afternoon.

They say the inhaled aroma from “essential” oils stimulate brain function and evoke feelings of relaxation. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing.  I could not resist the warm aromatherapy room – the healing scents beckoned to me.  A plate of sliced cucumbers lay on a chilled plate outside the room.  Before you knew it, feeling like a celebrity, I lay myself down on the cushions, cucumbers neatly placed over my eyes and let the relaxing scents permeate my soul.  I don’t know if cucumbers really help your eyes in the long term, but I can tell you this – my eyes felt refreshed and this may be a practice I continue at home.

From here, I decided to take my two slices of cucumber up to the roof top pool for a little more relaxation.  In truly pampered fashion, one of the ladies at the spa came over to assist me – placing my cucumbers on a plate with ice cubes to keep them cool, and accompanied me to the pool.  I could get used to this!  My time at the Mayakoba spa was truly the ultimate in luxury.  If you have never had a chocolate wrap, I highly recommend it!  Everyone should experience this soul nourishing treatment at least once in their life!

  1. As expensive as chocolate is, I think I’ll eat mine. While a wrap may be nice, it can’t possibly do much for the taste buds. 😉 It’s probably better for the waistline though.

  2. It would have taken all my strength to refrain from licking my chocolate encrusted arm 😉

  7. Thanks for all the comments – I have to say, the same thoughts crossed my mind. I wanted to try the chocolate, but I was not sure if it was edible! When I got into the shower, the temptation to lick my arm was huge! Luckily, they gave me a wonderful piece of chocolate to satisfy the intense cravings I had developed. Totally a decadent experience – so glad that I gave it a try! Would do another wrap again – my skin felt so good afterwards.
